I’ve been thinking about formality. For just a minute, not long at all. In particular, I’ve been thinking about the effect of ‘Gonzo Journalism’ on non-fiction writing and also as a symptom of lost formality in general. Formality. Like ‘going out’ clothes:

I wonder. Is there a connection between desegregation and more relaxed public dress? To what, then, do contemporary dandies signal? And, who’s looking? Who’s watching? Who’s seeing?
None of this has anything to do directly with Albert Serra’s appearance and Q&A at Cinema Paradiso in Hollywood on Friday, May 5th other than I may or may not go, but, you go, if you want to and can, and, that saying so in this way seems very casual.1 Now I’m off to think some more about how we ‘show’ ourselves and ‘see’ each other…
