Last Friday, January 24, the Rhythm Foundation and Hollywood CRA hosted Daptone Records label-mates Antibalas and the Scone Cash Players at the Hollywood Arts Park. The partnership between the Rhythm Foundation and the Hollywood CRA was renewed in 2019 after a hiatus a few years back. In 2015 the pair brought first-rate acts like Galactic, Jose Gonzalez, and The Wood Brothers to the amphitheater. The best part is these benevoulent organizations, together with a few sponsors like Hollywood KIA, provide these concerts for free. It’s a lovely outdoor setting with impressive equipment and staff. Hats off to the good people that make nights like this happen and the stellar performers for gracing our community of music fans.
DJ Terence Tabeau started the night off with a bang and had the crowd grooving to his eclectic vinyl selection, which he kept going in-between the live sets. Led by the master of the Funk Soul Organ, Adam Scone, Miami’s Scone Cash Players stepped to the stage. The group was joined by special guests from Antibalas to funk up the sound. At one point Jason Joshua set down his guitar to sing a couple of soulful tunes; and worked the stage in his Deport Donald Trump t-shirt.
Brooklyn based Antibalas made a special stop in Hollywood, FL, ahead of the national tour for their forthcoming album Fu Chronicles. The Afro Roots twelve piece picked through their catalog including a few unreleased tunes with an unmatched tightness and positivity. They even surprised the audience by playing a cover of Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon’s Che Che Cole.
This event was the first of a series of free events planned by the Rhythm Foundation and the Hollywood CRA at the Hollywood Arts Park. The next night at the park is on March 7 and will feature Marco Benevento with more events planned before the summer. The Rhythm Foundation organizes concerts and festivals throughout South Florida so keep an eye out on their schedule. Their next event is this Friday, January 31 at Bayfront Park Nu Deco Ensemble and Walshy Fire as part of the Super Bowl celebration.
